Summer Movie Madness Intergalatic Spectacular Orgy Fest! AKA movies I want to see

Posted in Ramblings of a mad man with tags , , , , , , , on May 19, 2008 by pacinofan

Because your all dying to know, here’s a list of the flicks I’m most excited about his summer. Please keep in mind these are in no particular order.

Iron Man

Already saw it, thought it as awesome. See my pseudo review here: http://pacinofan.wordpress.com/2008/05/06/pseudo-review-iron-man-or-i-loved-iron-man-dun-dun-dun-dun-dun/

Indiana Jones and Kingdom Of the Crystal Skull

Screw you if your one of the many fanboys that have already decided this movie is gonna blow. I know George Lucas lost most of his geek cred three Episodes ago, but I still have the faith in the Indiana Jones Holy Trinity of Ford, Lucas, and Spielberg. I know we geeks are a temperamental lot, but give this movie a chance.

The Dark Knight

My #1 most anticipated movie of the summer (and possibly 2008). This movie will kick your ass and you will thank it for the beating it gives you. All I need to say.

The Strangers

Based on the trailers, this is one creepy bitch of a movie.

Hellboy II: The Golden Army

I wasn’t a super huge fan of the original, but I Love most of Guillermo del Toro’s work and now that they got most of the origin stuff out of the way in Hellboy, I’m thinking the sequel will be a much more entertaining ride.

Midnight Meat Train

How can you not love that title? It’s also got Brooke Shields and Vinnie Jones.o I’m definitely not gonna miss that pairing.

X-Files: I Want To See Gillian Andseron Naked Believe

I wasn’t a hardcore fan of the series, but I still dug it. I like the fact that this move isn’t really about the alien conspiracy angles that got really convoluted and kind of ruined the The TV show.

Pineapple Express

I’m not even 100% sure what this movie is about, but Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg (Superbad) wrote it. I hear its an action/stoner comedy hybrid.

There are some other flicks I’m excited about, but for one reason or another I’m a little apprehensive. I’ll have that list up later.

New DVD Tuesday

Posted in Ramblings of a mad man with tags , on May 13, 2008 by pacinofan

Counting down the days until the DVD realase of Diary Of Dead (which I assume is all kinds of Awesome) and Rambo (which I know for a fact is all kinds of awesome). Diary comes out next week, and Rambo comes out May 27. Now, on to what is of interest to me this week:

Classic Sci-Fi Ultimate Collection Vol I & II

This was originally a Best Buy Exclusive, which pissed me off since the nearest Best Buy to me is about 4 hrs away. Awesome set for B-Movie lovers. Highly recommended!

Indiana Jones: The Adventure Collection

I already have the original box set that came out a few years ago, so I’ think I’m done buying Indiana Jones movies until they hit Blu-Ray. Still, if you haven’t picked up any of these previously, now is a good time. All three movies are also available separately.

As always, check out Dread Central for their comprehensive list of Horror DVD releases:

New DVD Tuesday… Special Wednesday Edition

Posted in Ramblings of a mad man with tags , , , , on May 7, 2008 by pacinofan

Not a whole lot of DVD releases I’m excitedted about this week, but there are a few that peek my interest.

The Car

Killer car movie from the 70’s? I’m so blind buying this. One of those movies I’ve heard a lot about but never seen.

Teeth

The premise of this movie has me instinctively covering my private parts. Girl’s budding sexuality some how mutates her vagina in to a fang filled creature. This would have been American Pie had David Cronenberg directed it.

The Orphanage

Yeah, I already mentioned this one 2 weeks ago, but it was just released in Canada this week for some reason.

As always check out Aint it Cool News for Harry’s DVD picks

Dread Central has there Horror DVD release list up as well which is, as always, way more comprehensive then mine:

Pseudo Review: Iron Man

Posted in Pseudo Reviews with tags , , , , , on May 6, 2008 by pacinofan

I’m gonna keep this short: Iron Man kicks all kinds of crazy ass.

Want some more detail?  Okay, here goes. My expectations for this move were sky freakin’ high, which usually leads to a big letdown. Not this time. It may not be the greatest Superhero movie of all time (Batman Begins and the first half of Richard Donner’s Superman and are still my faves) but I’m willing to say that Iron Man is the best of the Marvel comic movies. Even better than Rami’s Spider-Man, which I loved a little bit more than my first wife.

The film’s two biggest strengths are Director Jon Favreau and star Robert Downey Jr. Downey’s portrayal of Tony stark is perfection. Seriously, this is a way better Stark then you’ve read in the comics lately. Downey is good, Christopher Reeve as Superman good. Who better to play a flawed yet charming rogue that is able to conquer his demons and redeem himself then Downey? I can’t quite fathom how anyone ever doubted his casting. If you were one of the doubters, I hate you.

Speaking of doubting, a lot of people weren’t sold on Jon Favreau as director. Known more for comedic work, Favreau proves that he can elicit loud laughs and loud explosions. There is humor in the movie for sure, but its never campy or corny. I’ve seen some pretty good Superhero movies ruined because some jackhole (probably a producer who’s never read a comic in his life) feels the need to force some campy humor in to it. All the laughs in Iron Man are natural and usually pretty funny.

The effects are also top notch. Where Ang Lee’s Hulk failed to have a convicning CGI character (and by the looks of the trailers, so will the upcoming Incredible Hulk), Iron Man is able to blend what has to be Computer imagery w/ practical effects pretty seamlessly. I never doubted it was Downey in the Iron Man suit, even when he was flying in to the stratosphere. It helps when you have the legendary Stan Winston working on those awesome Iron Man suits.

I could go on and on, but you’ve probably already read and heard a tonne of Iron Man reviews by now (all good reviews it seems). So I’ll just end w/ this: If your not a comic book fan, you’ll still get a huge kick out of Iron Man. If you are a comic book fan, you’ll get a huge geek boner.

Iron Man = $$$

Looks like ol’ Shellhead’s movie is gonna make some cash:

See what happens when you decide to make a make a superhero movie with a good director that takes the material seriously (Favreau’s money baby) and some inspired casting? You a get friggin’ great flick! Good move by Marvel to take control of there properties and make sure their treated w/ respect. It’s too bad this came to late for the Fantastic Four movie. Jessica Alba as Invisible Woman? Nice casting jackhole

I went to my local multiplex this afternoon to get tickets for Sunday. By 5:00 the 6:45 and 9:45 showings were already sold out. Nothing warms my heart more than a well made genre movie kicking ass!

Indiana Jones and the Wicked Cool Toys

Posted in Ramblings of a mad man with tags , , , on May 2, 2008 by pacinofan

I’ve been waiting for this for over 20 years:

New Indiana Jones action figures.

You see, many years ago, I had the Indiana Jones figure from the original Raiders of the Lost Ark toy line.

http://www.raidersofthelosttoys.com/kennerindy.html

Well, I lost that Indy. I don’t remember how, or exactly when, but I know he went missing. I searched and searched, but never found him. There wasn’t even a trace of his small plastic fedora. To this day I have no idea what the hell happened to him, although I’ve always suspected my German Mechanic figure:

http://www.raidersofthelosttoys.com/germanmechanic.html

Fast forward to May 1, 2008. The brand spanking new Indiana Jones toy line from Hasbro is officially released! I know there have been a few other Indy lines, (most recently a wave available only at Disney World) but these are the first mass market Indiana Jones figures since 1984.

It’s a pretty good toy line with a good character selection. There are also a few vehicles and play sets, something you don’t see a lot of with/ modern day action figures. I picked up three Indy’s (regular, whip action, and deluxe Indy on a horse) and the Cairo Swordsman. I’ll definitely be picking up a few more. These aren’t quite perfect however. The Harrison Ford likenesss leaves a bit to be desired, which is strange since Hasbro has been making pretty good Han Solo figures for a few years now. Overall though, they look pretty good.

My Toys R Us only had the first wave of figures (based on ROTLA) but I’m pretty sure the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull wave is also supposed to be out. I’ll probably hunt for those tonight.

This looks to be a real fun series and I’m excited to get figures from all four movies. I’m also now in official “pumped” status for the new movie.
